The Under-Secretary of External Affairs then tried to avoid the issue by insisting on the two following arguments:
1) Explaining the danger to which the position of the island exposes the transports.
I remarked to him that our government would certainly not refuse to discuss steps which would be necessary, once the former state of affairs was re-established.
2) (A corrupt passage follows.)
Finally, he avoided clarifying his position, saying that his government was in close touch with Washington on the matter, and that a solution was awaiting the results of conversations in Washington with the French Ambassador. Besides the Prime Minister would get in touch with me without delay.
In short, they are trying here to avoid taking a definite stand and are trying to hide behind the actions of the other two governments.
